You can get started right now and, when you are done, you will then complete your in-water skill-development sessions and final open-water training dives at Mammoth Lake Texas! It’s that simple! STEP ONE
GET SMART
Start your SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course and master all the important academic information online or at your local dive shop. You can complete this phase through self-study, at your own pace, in the convenience of your home or office. All eLearning courses work on mobile and tablet devices too.
STEP TWO
GET WET
For entry-level certification courses (as well as some continuing-education classes), the next step will be to complete your in-water skill-development training. This takes place in a swimming pool or similar body of confined water, under the supervision of an SDI Instructor.
STEP THREE
GO DIVING
The final step is to complete the required number of SDI open-water training dives under the supervision of your SDI Instructor. Here you will apply what you have learned during your academic and skill-development sessions, while learning practical lessons that can only be gained through real-world experience in open water.
LAKE JACKSON
Once your eLearning is complete, it is time for a classroom and pool sessions! The classroom session will be held at Mammoth Dive Academy where you will finish any paperwork, take an assessment, pick up scuba gear, and learn about NItrox!
Now you are ready for confined water, which will be held in one of our three pools!!
LAST STOP: MAMMOTH LAKE TEXAS
After you've completed the online studies and pool sessions, you are now ready for Mammoth Lake Texas, located in Lake Jackson. We have our own dedicated pavillion, dock, and underwater platform perfect for skills. During your dives you'll find sunken boats, animal sculpters, and a full size C-130 aircraft!!
Once you're certified, you will always be welcome at Mammoth Lake Texas for fun dives!

NITROX COURSE INCLUDED FOR FREE!!!
In recreational diving, Nitrox is referred to as any gas where the mixture of oxygen is greater than 21% thereby reducing the nitrogen content to less than 79%.
You’ll learn in your Open Water course that decompression sickness is caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in your body tissues. Breathing a lower percentage of nitrogen (or a higher percentage of oxygen) allows less nitrogen to build up in your body and therefore increasing your decompression limits and decreasing the risk of decompression sickness.

Learn To Dive With SDI’s Open Water Scuba Diver Course
Who is this course for:
- Persons desiring to obtain a Scuba Diving certification
- Persons interested in underwater exploration
Course prerequisites
- Minimum age 18, 15 with parental consent
- Ability to swim 200 yards continuously
- Junior Open Water Scuba Diver Course (10 – 14 years old) (Students between the ages of 10 through 14 may obtain an SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver Certification if the following conditions are met: junior students are to train and dive under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or active dive professional.)
What you can expect to learn:
The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Course will cover all of the necessary skills and knowledge for open water scuba diving, including:
- The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc.
- Physics and physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, mixed gases, etc.
- Dive equipment selection, assembly, use and maintenance
- Dive planning
- Basic scuba skills including mask and regulator skills, swimming underwater, buoyancy control, basic rescue techniques, and emergency procedures

Upon successful completion of the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course, graduates may:
- Conduct open water dives in conditions similar to their training
- Continue their dive education by enrolling in SDI Advanced Diver and Specialty courses
